Story

I trained as a doctor. Six years of medical school, then a postgraduate degree in healthcare management, the track that prepares people to run hospitals, not design software.

A startup called AIT Assistance brought me in as a medical expert. Ukraine was running a national reform to digitize its hospitals: a digital doctor’s office, mandated by the state. AIT Assistance was building the electronic hospital behind it: departments, wards, doctor and patient profiles, diagnostic equipment, a structure that could chain multiple hospitals into one patient journey. The first rollout covered hospitals under Ukrainian Railways.

I wasn’t hired to design. I was hired to know what a hospital actually needs. But the platform needed someone to turn that knowledge into screens, workflows, and a system doctors and administrators could use, so I became that person too. Two designers reported to me before the year was out.

That’s the pattern that’s followed me since: I keep ending up doing more than the title says, because the work in front of me needs it. Fifteen years and eight companies later, the throughline hasn’t changed: see the real scope of the problem, build the system it needs, and name what you actually did.

Scope vs title

My contract titles have run narrower than my work more than once. At AIT Assistance, I was hired as a medical expert and became a design lead who hired and managed two designers. At DXC/Halliburton, I was the Lead across ten designers and three teams, never their people manager of record. At City of Toronto, my contract says Senior Designer; I run the design system as its lead and playing coach.

I state both on this site: the title on paper, and the role I actually performed. No inflation, no false modesty, just what happened.
